Chapter Fourteen

From that point on, a good night kiss was always on the table, by which they really meant parking in the lot behind Trevor’s building and making out like teenagers. It was embarrassing. They were both adults, and even if Trevor’s roommates were underfoot at his place, Andre lived alone in his townhouse—they could have gone there. On instinct, Trevor understood Andre was doing his best to hold the line and not push Trevor before he was ready for anything else. As ridiculous as it may have been, there was something exciting about the semi-public setting and the hearkening back to adolescence. Mrs. Crotchety in 2B only ever surprised them once, and instead of giving them her usual evil eye, she smirked and winked, rapping on the window with her cane before heading back inside. The next morning, Trevor found an envelope under the door containing a photocopy of a love letter her late husband must have sent her when they were young. It was full of poetic language, the subtext of which was enough to make Trevor blush.

The next time Trevor and Andre met up, another Friday evening at the jazz cafe, Trevor couldn’t remember why they’d ever set a limit on their physical contact. Andre not only looked good, when leaned in to kiss Trevor’s cheek, he smelled good, too. Trevor breathed in deeply, wanting to memorize it. He must have failed the subtlety test because Andre chuckled and pulled away, causing heat to rush to Trevor’s face.

Just as they finished their coffee, the band started a string of slower songs. Andre held out his hand to Trevor, who remained seated, looking up at Andre. He’d seen couples dance there before, including women dancing with other women, but he’d never seen two men. When he thought about it, outside of his few excursions to bars, he’d never been in a space where men were openly affectionate. His stomach knotted.

“We’re safe here,” Andre said, breaking into this thoughts.

“You’re sure?”

“Absolutely.” He sat down again. “Other than the job I took at your church, I don’t purposefully go anywhere I’m not sure about. If anything, the good folks here are more shocked I brought a white person than that I brought a man.”

Trevor chuckled. “I do stand out a bit.”

“Just a little, blondie,” Andre agreed, reaching out to tug a lock of Trevor’s hair. He rose to his feet once more. “Now, are you gonna dance with me, or what?”

The or what lodged itself in Trevor’s brain and turned into a whole host of things he wanted to do besides dance. He kept them to himself and got up, accepting Andre’s hand. They earned a few glances from other patrons, but by the time Andre had Trevor in his arms, they’d mostly gone back to whatever they’d been doing. Three or four other couples joined them on the dance floor. A dapper older gentleman with a thin mustache put his arm around his beautiful gray-haired date’s waist and pulled her closer.
